Huhtamo DESIGN CULTURE AND SEMIOTICS - Some basic concepts

نویسنده

  • Erkki Huhtamo
چکیده

Etymology: from the Greek word "semeion" ("sign") Semiotics is a field of research that studies signs as an essential part of cultural life and communication. According to semiotics, we can only know culture (and reality itself) by means of signs, in other words, through the processes of signification. Semiotics has two founders: the Swiss linguist Ferdinand de Saussure (died 1913) and the American philosopher Charles Sandres Peirce (died 1914).

My purpose is to remind semioticians about the void that his passing away left in the theoretical edifice of the discipline. He understood semiotics as a study that simultaneously and with a unified conc...

Interface design: A semiotic paradigm*

Design comes about in an environment traditionally ca...

The Role of Semiotics in the Study of Language, Linguistics and Communication: An Overview

All knowledge, from the most tentative guess to the most demonstrative certainty, is grounded on evidence; it is supported by data, credentials, warrants, and premises. The data are not them-selves evidence for that to which they attest; they must be interpreted to be evidence, to give some credibility to what they support. David Savan on C.S. Peirce (1980: 255) The whole of culture should be s...
